Three Gorges Dam Project

What is the Three Gorges Project?
The Three Gorges Project consists of three major structures, the Dam, the Powerhouses and the Shiplocks, which makes it a unique super power station worldwide.  It is the world's largest hydropower plant that will be able to create as much electricity as 18 nuclear power plants. The dam measures 180m (600 feet) high and 2.5 km (1.5 mi) wide. China boasts a contingent of approximately 250,000 workers employed in constructing the water conservation and hydropower projects. A lake about 650 km (about 400 mi) long will form behind the dam.

Where is the Three Gorges Project?
The site of the dam is near the city of Yichang.

What are the benefits?

The dam is expected to control the flooding of the Yangtze River. The reservoir will enable 10,000-ton ocean-going freighters to sail directly into the nation's interior for six months of each year. Furthermore, it will bring additional hydroelectric power to eastern and central China regions and the eastern part of southwest China's Sichuan province.

When will it be completed?
The completion date of the dam is 2009. It will have taken a total of 17 years to build.
