Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is
a delightful city on the south bank of the Yangtze. A relatively modern city, the city centre
retains its Ming street plan, the old city wall is largely intact, and the surrounding
countryside is breathtaking. Nanjing has been capital of six dynasties over the past 2,000 years
and today boasts a balance of revolutionary and imperial China.

One of the main city attractions is the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum
in which the founder of Republican China, Sun Yat-Sen, is laid to rest in this mausoleum
embedded in the slopes of the Purple and Gold Mountain (Zijin Shan). There are two wonderful
museums in the city to visit: The Taiping Museum and The Provincial Museum. The Taiping
exhibits maps, coins, weapons, documents and other artifact of the Taiping movement while
the Provincial Museum is noted for its Han jade burial suit yet also has ceramics and
bronzes from prehistoric times to the Qing dynasty on display. The tomb itself is an
uppermost pavilion accessible by a flight of stairs and his remains are covered by a
marble effigy. Visitors to Nanjing should aslo be sure to visit the Temple of Confucious,
Linggu Temple, and enjoy the remarkable scenery of the Qinhuai River.
