Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, lies
on the banks of Qiantang River about 97 km from the sea. Most famous for the West Lake, Hangzhou's
cultural and historical importance lies on the fact that it is also the southern terminus of the
mighty waterway, the Grand Canal. Comparatively, Hangzhou is a quaint provincial town that today,
remains renowned for its impressive beauty as one of China's most popular scenic attractions. A
popular honeymoon destination, Hangzhou is a place for leisure and sensual pleasure. Throughout
history its beauty has frequently been recorded and even Marco Polo wrote about its captivating
women and the loveliness of its temples and gardens. Although some of its historical buildings
have been destroyed over the centuries, parts of the town have not changed over time.

West Lake
This picturesque crystal lake is surrounded on three
sides by rolling wooded hills. Three isles are located at its centre and 2 causeways, the Bai and the
Su, enclose the lake, the result of water-control work from the Tang and Song Dynasties. The Bai
Causeway runs from the city of Hangzhou while the Su Causeway bisects the lake from north to south.
The entire lake is ornamented with elegant stone bridges and charming pavilions. This destination is a
must-see for all visitors to this region; it is indeed an earthly paradise.
