Guangzhou, or Canton, is the capital of Guangdong Province, a major city and port situated on China's fifth river, the Pearl. Strategically located, Guangzhou neighbours the industrious Hong Kong and Macao. It is also the largest city in South China and has been a popular trading location with the Europeans over the centuries. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to trade here (from 1516), followed by the Dutch and the British. The past decade has seen great economic achievements in the city thanks to the policy of reform making it a Special Economic Zone fuelled by foreign and Chinese investments. Guangzhou is now known for its famous for its cooking, as well as its banyan trees with distinct hanging roots. There are numerous hotels, restaurants and night markets welcoming visitors every year.
