Coastal China

The coast of China stretches from the western edge of North Korea to the eastern border of Vietnam, and passes through four major bodies of water. A journey along the coast ensures marvellous scenery and features climatic extremes from the cold-water port of Dalian to the tropical south.

Dalian

Dalian, an Open Coastal City, is a famous seaport and the only real port in the northeast of China. Compared to other modern Chinese cities, Dalian is quite clean and uncrowded and has a fairly good air quality. The Japanese and the Russians have had strong interests in this port throughout history and thus a fascinating array of Japanese and Russian architectural styles can be seen throughout the city. Dalian's extensive coastline boasts excellent beaches and the streets are quite lively. At Tiger Beach Park, rock formations of crouching tigers can be seen and Jinshi Beach is a popular tourist resort. Dalian is, however, most famous for its seafood restaurants. With the sea as its resource, visitors can enjoy tasty delights such as sea cucumber stew, soft-fried sea conches, or phoenix shark's fin.

Tianjin

Tianjin is another of China's major ports and is the country's third largest city, situated in the northeast and edging the Yan Mountain in the north. There is a European atmosphere present since Tianjin was controlled by Western powers in the 19th century. It has become an important trading port because it connects numerous rivers and provinces of North China and therefore, occupies a key strategic position. There is a lot to do once in Tianjin. It is a bustling city and a modern metropolis with style. Visit a carpet factory and watch the workers as they hand-knot the colourful threads right before our eyes. There are various other attractions throughout the city worth visiting: Ancient Culture Street, Food Street, Water Park, the Tianjin Arts Museum, and the Dabei Temple.

Hainan

Hainan Island is an enormous tropical paradise southwest of Guangzhou. This island remains magnificent in its natural beauty, untouched by developers and is yet a luxurious getaway resort area. The awe-inspiring tropical forests, mountains and leafy-palm lined beaches make the island a traveller's dream oasis waiting to be experienced in the South China Sea. Enjoy solitude, avoid irritating crowds and select a beach resort, guest house, or private villa in the island's dense, green hills. Haikou, the capital of Hainan, and Sanya are nearby and both offer superb amenities to travellers. Sea Beach in Sanya is a spectacular 7.5 km-long beach covered with fine white sand and its water is warm year round. Sea Beach is ideal and popular for all water sports like water-skiing and yachting or even just as a prime bathing location. Tianya Jaijiao (End of Heaven and Corner of the Sea) is another must see attraction on the beach of Sanya. The site is a group of huge stones standing upright on the sand; the centre stone is 10 m high with a circumference of 60 m with two Chinese characters carved on it: End of Heaven and Corner of the Sea. The mountains in the background and the near sea provides a beautiful wonder to be seen by all.
